## Overtime pay

 Free

Use the interactive calculator with JavaScript enabled. The method and worked examples are available below in HTML and Markdown.

1. Enter the confirmed regular hourly rate for the workweek.
2. Enter total hours worked and the selected overtime threshold.
3. Choose time and a half, double time or an agreed custom multiplier.
4. Review the earnings and premium breakdown, then copy, save or print it.

**Method:** Gross pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier

The quick answer

## Here’s how it works.

Overtime earnings equal overtime hours × your confirmed regular hourly rate × the selected multiplier. With a $20 regular rate, 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours at time and a half, gross pay is $950: $800 regular earnings plus $150 overtime earnings.

Method

Gross pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier

## How to use overtime pay

## How to calculate overtime pay

First separate the hours at the selected threshold. At a 40-hour threshold, a 45-hour week has 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours. Multiply each set of hours by its appropriate rate, then add the two earnings amounts.

The overtime rate is different from the extra premium. At $20 per hour and a 1.5 multiplier, the overtime rate is $30. Five overtime hours earn $150, of which $50 is the additional half-time premium. The calculator labels both amounts so they are not counted twice.

| Part of the example | Calculation | Amount |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Regular earnings | 40 × $20 | $800.00 |
| Overtime earnings | 5 × $20 × 1.5 | $150.00 |
| Total gross | $800 + $150 | $950.00 |
| Additional premium, already included | 5 × $20 × 0.5 | $50.00 |

## Use the correct workweek and regular rate

This tool performs earnings arithmetic using the rate and rules you enter. It does not decide whether an employee is exempt, select a state overtime rule or establish a regular rate from every type of compensation. Bonuses and other earnings may affect the regular rate; use the rate confirmed for your payroll.

Keep separate workweeks separate. A quiet week does not cancel overtime hours in another week. Time and a half is the starting example; double time and custom multipliers let you check an explicit contractual scenario. The result is gross earnings before withholding or deductions.

## Compare the result with your payroll records

Use the timesheet for the exact workweek, not just a pay-period label. Confirm whether the hours include paid leave, training, travel or other categories before choosing the worked-hours figure. Check the resulting regular and overtime lines against the actual payroll statement.

Dollar results are rounded to cents. This is an independent calculation aid; a paystub should reflect actual payroll records rather than a newly invented payment.

## Common questions

What is time and a half at $20 an hour?

Time and a half is $30 per overtime hour: $20 × 1.5. Five such hours earn $150, including $50 above the straight-time amount.

Does this overtime calculator subtract taxes?

No. It shows gross regular and overtime earnings before taxes, benefits and other deductions.

Can I calculate double time?

Yes. Select the 2× multiplier for your chosen scenario. The calculator applies your choice; it does not decide when double time is required.
