How to use flatten a pdf

  1. Choose a supported, unencrypted PDF with filled form fields.

  3. Preview every page and compare it with the original.
  4. Download the new copy and retain your original editable file.

What PDF form flattening changes

A fillable PDF can store a field’s value separately from the appearance that a reader draws. Flattening embeds the supported field appearance into the page and removes the interactive form control. The visible answer remains, but that field is no longer a fillable box in the new copy.

The tool processes your file in browser memory. It does not send the PDF to the Formz order service or save it in an account. Choosing a different file clears the previous result; leaving the page discards the tool state.

Supported files and the preview check

This tool handles standard AcroForm PDFs within the displayed size and page limits. Password-protected, signed and XFA forms are rejected so they are not silently altered. A PDF without fillable fields does not need this form-flattening operation.

Appearance compatibility varies between PDF producers. Check each resulting page, especially long text, special characters, checkboxes and dropdown selections. If a field cannot be safely flattened, the tool reports the problem instead of offering an incomplete result. The original file remains unchanged.

Flattening is different from redaction and signing

A flattened answer is still document content. A PDF editor may be able to modify other content, and text may remain selectable. Flattening does not make a document tamper-proof, remove hidden information or securely erase a taxpayer identifier.

Use a suitable redaction workflow when information must be removed, and a supported signing workflow when a signature is needed. Keep your editable original separately; this download is a new copy for review and printing.

OperationWhat it does
Flatten supported fieldsTurns field appearances into page content
RedactionRemoves information using a separate supported workflow
Digital signingCreates a signature using a separate signing workflow
Print reviewChecks the visible result on every page

Common questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. This tool reads and processes the selected PDF locally in your browser. The file is not sent to the Formz order service.

Can I flatten a signed or password-protected PDF?

This tool rejects signed and encrypted files. Use the appropriate signing or document-owner workflow and keep the original intact.

Does flattening securely hide an SSN or other text?

No. Flattening is not redaction. Text can remain in the PDF content; use a supported redaction workflow to remove information.
